Projects   >   North Plaza Entrance

CLM / Volker Fitzpatrick tasked McGregor Fabric Structures with providing a demountable, covered vehicle entrance for the North Plaza Entrance to the Olympic Park – a site that was due to change significantly throughout the Olympic Park’s construction.

Our brief was to design, manufacture and install a purpose-built, weather-resistant canopy, which could be moved repeatedly without compromising the integrity and strength of the structure.

The construction needed to be large enough to accommodate up to five articulated lorries simultaneously across eight lanes with the flexibility to cope with the changing site and application.

Aligning with the duration of the Olympic Park’s construction project, the design needed to accommodate multiple relocations with differing terrain and site restrictions. All the materials needed to be exceptionally durable and resistant to extreme weather.

This design ensured that the entrance structure could be quickly and safely moved from one location to another at short notice, without any impact on delivery schedules to the site.

The implemented design was formed of a galvanized steel structure fixed to concrete plinths with plated anchors, consisting of four identical PVC fabric canopies with additional open lanes providing eight access lanes. This design ensured that the entrance structure could be quickly and safely moved from one location to another at short notice, without any impact on delivery schedules to the site. Layouts could and did change overnight and six months after installation, we had to dismantle, move and reconfigure the structure ten miles north of its original location. This move also entailed a marked increase to the size of the entrance necessitating a redesign along with additional reinforcement to support the new, significantly heavier structure.

The complete structural framework, PVC canopy and fixing system was manufactured across our two dedicated factories, giving the flexibility to adapt with the demands of the site, along with the quality and rapid turnaround required by the client.

Installed and reconfigured by a CSCS qualified team, adhering to the highest health and safety standards. Reconfigurations were formed using a crane to move the entrance in sections from one position to another. This minimised the amount of dismantling required and allowed us to conduct the move quickly, safely and without any disruption to deliveries onsite.
